There is a fundamental misunderstanding about me.

 - నా గురించి ఒక మౌలిక అపార్ధం వుంది.

 నేను దాదాపు 50 యేళ్ళుగా మార్క్సిస్టుని. సమాజం కోరుకునే సాధారణ స్వప్నం కమ్యూనిజం అనేది నా నిశ్చిత అభిప్రాయం. మార్క్స్, ఏంగిల్స్, లెనిన్, ట్రాట్స్కీ అంటే విపరీత అభిమానం.

అయితే కమ్యూనిజం వేరు; కమ్యూనిస్టు పార్టీలు వేరు. నిరంతరం మారుతున్న సమాజాన్ని అధ్యనం చేయలేక, దీర్ఘకాలిక వ్యూహాలను రచించలేక కమ్యూనిస్టు పార్టీలు నిస్సారంగా, నిస్సత్తువగా మారిపోయాయన్నది నా విమర్శ.

ముఖ్యంగా 1990 తరువాత ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా వచ్చిన మార్పుల్ని ఏ కమ్యూనిస్టు పార్టి కూడ అధ్యయనం చేయలేదన్నది నా విమర్శ.

కమ్యూనిస్టు పార్టీల మీద, వాటి నాయకుల ఆలోచనల మీద నేను తరచూ విమర్శలు చేస్తుంటాను. అది నా బాధ్యత. తమ కాలపు మార్క్సిస్టులు, కమ్యూనిస్టుల మీద మార్క్స్, లెనిన్ కూడ చాలా తీవ్ర విమర్శలు చేసేవారు. "దేవుడా నన్ను మార్క్సిస్టుగా పుట్టించనందుకు ధన్యవాదాలు" అన్నది స్వయంగా కార్ల్ మార్క్సే.

విమర్శను సహించలేనివారు నన్ను కమ్యూనిస్టు వ్యతిరేకిగా చిత్రించడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తుంటారు. వారి అమాయికత్వానికి నేను నవ్వుకుంటుంటాను.

భోపాల్ లో మిక్ గ్యాస్ లీక్ నుండి ఇప్పటి వరకు దేశంలో జరిగిన ప్రతి ఉద్యమ నాయకుల్ని నేను స్వయంగా వెళ్ళి అభినందనలు తెలిపి వచ్చాను. కొన్నింటికి నేరుగా నాయకత్వం కూడ వహించాను. జంతర్ మంతర్ నిరసనోద్యమంలొ పాల్గొనడానికి ఢిల్లీ వెళ్ళడానికి అన్ని ఏర్పాట్లూ చేసుకున్నాను. రానూపోనూ టిక్కేట్లూ బుక్ చేసుకున్నాను. సరిగ్గా బయలు దేరాల్సిన రాత్రే అక్కడ ఉద్యమం ముగిసింది.

షాహీన్ బాగ్ ఉద్యమం, రైతుల ఉద్యమం మణిపూర్ అల్లర్లు అన్నింటికీ వెళ్ళాను.

మనోళ్ళు చాలా మందికి సెలెక్టివ్ మెమోరీ లాస్. కమ్యూనిస్టు కార్యకలాపాలని విమర్శిస్తే చాలు సరిదిద్దుకోరు. పైగా యాంటి కమ్యూనిస్టు ముద్ర వేస్తారు. ఇది కమ్యూనిస్టులు సహితం నేర్చుకున్న సోషల్ మీడియా కల్చర్.

There is a fundamental misunderstanding about me.

I have been a Marxist for nearly fifty years. It is my firm conviction that communism remains the shared dream that society ultimately seeks. My admiration for Marx, Engels, Lenin and Trotsky runs deep.

Communism, however, is one thing; Communist parties are another. My criticism is that these parties have grown barren and enervated, incapable of studying a society in constant flux or of crafting durable long-term strategies. In particular, I fault them for failing to examine the profound global transformations that followed 1990.

I regularly critique Communist parties and the thinking of their leaders. That is my responsibility. Marx and Lenin themselves leveled sharp criticism at the Marxists and Communists of their own time. Karl Marx once remarked, “Thank God I was not born a Marxist.”

Those who cannot abide criticism attempt to paint me as an anti-Communist. I find their innocence amusing.

From the Bhopal MIC gas leak to the present day, I have personally traveled to congratulate the leaders of virtually every significant movement in the country; in some I have taken a direct leadership role. I arranged everything necessary to travel to Delhi for the Jantar Mantar protests, even booking round-trip tickets. The movement ended on the very night I was scheduled to depart.

I went to Shaheen Bagh, to the farmers’ protests, to the unrest in Manipur—everywhere.

Too many of our people suffer from selective amnesia. Criticize Communist activities and they refuse to correct course; instead they brand the critic an anti-Communist. It is a social-media habit that even Communists have acquired.
